DISAPPEARANCE ALONE

ANNA K. POTTER

Friday, September 20, 7pm

DISAPPEARANCE ALONE is a solo performance series in which artists commission solo works from Andrew Marcus (Director of Andrew Marcus Disappearance and The School Of Disappearance) employing the Disappearance performance methodology.

Disappearance emphasizes the primacy of the sensory perceptual encounter, as negotiated by performers and audiences -- in recognition of anticipated and unanticipated elements comprising the situation as it unfolds in real time and presents to the engaged subject.

Disappearance solos are deeply personal, in that Marcus’ interest is the evocation and performatively effective framing of the commissioning artist’s deeper desires toward meetings with self, and world, engaging the real beyond traditional technical, choreographic, and performative strategies.

Anna K. Potter shows tremendous courage and skill in revealing aspects of her own body-mind/world never before seen in performance. Her physical precision, her discipline in following lines that are curiously compelling, and her emotional vulnerability will draw audiences into her world, or more precisely, into worlds emergent and participated in, by her, with us.

Co-curated by Julie Rothschild and Meg Madorin, CLOSE LOOK aims to promote dance and performance off the stage. Housed within FloorSpace Studio in North Boulder, solo artists are given one evening, 400 sq ft, an honorarium, studio access for rehearsals, and production support to make and share their work. The intimate nature of the venue provides immediate confines from which to negotiate one's artistic freedom. An intention of the series is to witness how each artist navigates these challenges differently. Our mission is to provide opportunities for the public and this diverse group of artists to engage within close quarters.

June 7th Artist is Julie Rothschild, sharing her new performance project: Gestural Sketches.
Within the cube-like frame of the studio; in relationship to a selection of porcelain objects by Boulder Artist, Liz Quan, Julie shares her decades long practice of dancing with what is present. This practices serves her in the act of dissing out material for her performance projects; and, as in this performance, is the work itself.

May 3rd Artist is Meg Madorin, sharing her new work, lostandfound

lostandfound is a performance which asks questions about relationship, memory and time. Questions like: what to keep and what to give away? How long does it take to leave? Where will I go when I get there? Who will meet me when I’m ready to be seen? How much is worth sharing and what’s better left untouched? How much time is too much time? By placing this questioning as the main focus, further inquiry is developed about how or why we feel the need to seek answers. Within this work, time is spent trying to circumvent the urge to know and instead embracing uncertainty as the unavoidable beast that it already is.

Disappearance emphasizes the primacy of the sensory perceptual encounter, as negotiated by performers and audiences -- in recognition of anticipated and unanticipated elements comprising the situation as it unfolds in real time and presents to the engaged subject.

Kim Nelson danced professionally in Chicago and New York, 1993-2002. Since 1998, her interests in surrendering to body led inquiries initiated her in-depth study of Authentic Movement.  Since delving into Disappearance in 2013, she is called back to a space of performance from a very different place than from that which she entered.

Andrew Marcus founded DISAPPEARANCE in 2010 to explore boundary space between the ordinary, the beautiful, and the sublime. DISAPPEARANCE develops practices to effectively transcend such boundaries; to encourage experience of the magical and the erotic; and to unequivocally engage the real.

DISAPPEARANCE ALONE is a solo extension of the duet series DISAPPEARANCE AND.  The series was initiated when Wendell Beavers approached Andrew Marcus with the idea that he invite “peers” into the Disappearance performance process in a series of duets.  Wendell first, followed by Kim, engaged Andrew in duet performances; meeting, if not fully taking on, the Disappearance methodology.

In DISAPPEARANCE ALONE, however, the performer thoroughly assumes the task of working within the Disappearance framework, filtered through her unique approach to that work and her larger historical experience.

Disappearance emphasizes the primacy of the sensory perceptual encounter, as negotiated by performers and audiences -- in recognition of anticipated and unanticipated elements comprising the situation as it unfolds in real time and presents to the engaged subject.

We look forward to sharing with you.

Disappearance Alone

DSC_0118-2ATP16E.jpg

What of the encounter, really?

That thing there: amid the spectacle, its reflection of my gaze—does it reveal anything of its self?

And the real, does it not, cloaked in it’s (in)visibility, stand before me, silently pleading to be undressed?

Too late.  Lost in reflection, the moment recedes.

Dog Dance

Dog Dance

Dog Dance is an improvised dance solo based on noticing the breath and sensation inside the body, and following what emerges from that listening.

Performer - Joanna Rotkin

There's a moment in Dog Dance when it feels like I’m falling. When that happens, I know I'm “in” — I’m present with what’s arising within me.

I always wonder: Will the audience have an "in" moment too? Will they sense what is arising in them?

In this dance, I disregard hope and expectation and instead, I listen to the deepest part of myself: I invite the audience to do the same.
